Our Solutions for Into Orbit FLL 2018

The two solutions we are proposing are implementing yoga to relieve stress and adding VR and AR technology to make exercise more fun. Also, we had one idea that is not part of our actual: being able to communicate with astronauts.Virtual reality technology seems like an ideal solution, except for one tiny problem: you aren’t aware of what’s happening around you! We came up with a new idea to solve this issue – a crossover between augmented and virtual reality.

Virtual reality technology seems like an ideal solution, except for one tiny problem: you aren’t aware of what’s happening around you! We came up with a new idea to solve this issue – a crossover between augmented and virtual reality. Translucent holograms would be beamed into a room for the astronaut to view. There would be a multi directional treadmill in the center of the room, and the holograms would change as the player ‘moved’ through the town. This immerses the player in his/her new, interesting surroundings, while also allowing them to get exercise.

Yoga will counteract the effects of low gravity and space sickness. The Yogic practices – breathing maneuvers, relaxation, meditation, and specific muscular movement – will lead to a big decrease in stress levels, while increasing physical muscle movement. This serves the dual purpose of addressing both the effects of microgravity, as well as the stressors of extended space travel.  Yoga and meditation must be mandated in the pre launch training to prepare the astronaut well. Yoga will also take a longer time to be beneficial.

Our other idea was to allow astronauts to communicate with the general public. At first, astronauts could only communicate with the center or people that were handling the trip. Then, astronauts got to talk with their families. Dr. Caer McCabe, a scientist who worked at NASA for 3 years, agreed that it would be a good idea for astronauts to receive messages from the general public, though it would have a smaller effect on lifting their spirits than being able to communicate with their families. The reason this idea was not a part of our final solution is that this idea has sort of already been implemented, so we thought the other two would be more innovative solutions.
